You just found out that your partner has had an affair! You feel terrible – humiliated, enraged, devastated even ashamed.
You have so many questions – why did this happen? how could it happen? do any of your friends know? also, what about your family and/or your partner’s family?
So what should you do? Do you leave or throw your partner out?
Firstly, you need to give yourself some time to gather your thoughts and to decide whether or not your relationship is worth trying to save.
In most cases the answer to the above is “yes”. Why, you ask, should I try to save it when my trust has been so broken by the lies?
Many affairs occur because of something missing in the primary relationship: maybe your partner felt unheard, ignored, belittled, controlled, rejected etc. So your partner had those needs innocently met by someone outside your relationship (often at work) and then that developed until it culminated in the affair.
Since a relationship is the responsibility of BOTH partners, you need to confront yourself and ask what you did or didn’t do that might have contributed to your partner’s feelings that were not met in your relationship, and what you could/should have done differently.
The next step is to determine what you can now do to rectify the situation. Ideally, contact Francesca or Stan to help you through the process of Affair Recovery. We give you practical tools for you both to use that will not only assist the recovery, but also provide the framework for you to develop and grow your relationship so that it can be better than it was.
Communication improves; full honesty is on the table – you will find that topics you found difficult to bring up before the affair are suddenly able to be discussed without blame.
So if you find yourself in that space, call us on 03 9427 0032 and make an appointment for you both: if you like, you can ask for a free introductory session without obligation.
